career journey spotlight: The King of Code Compliance
Meet Marty Rebholz, Executive Director for our Code Compliance team in New York City.
For more than five decades, Marty Rebholz has helped shape the built environment in New York City, building a reputation as a trusted advisor, regulatory specialist, and industry leader. Today, as Executive Director, Marty continues to be a valued resource for project teams and stakeholders, providing strategic guidance on complex building code challenges and supporting teams as they navigate regulatory requirements with confidence.
A Career Built on Insight and Problem Solving
Marty's journey into regulatory consulting was not the result of a predetermined career path. Originally pursuing architecture, he entered the profession in 1977 with aspirations of becoming an architectural designer. While he enjoyed creating projects and earning his architectural license, he ultimately discovered that his greatest strength lay elsewhere.
Over time, clients and colleagues consistently turned to him not for design solutions, but for his ability to understand, interpret, and administer building codes and regulatory requirements. Recognizing this unique talent, Marty embraced the field of code interpretation and has since become one of the industry's most respected voices.
Strategic Guidance for Clients and Teams
In his current role, Marty serves primarily as an advisor, guiding project teams through complex regulatory and building code challenges. Drawing on decades of experience working with the New York City Department of Buildings and other regulatory agencies, he develops strategies that allow clients to avoid common pitfalls and move projects forward efficiently.
His insight is often sought by clients who specifically request his involvement in projects. Whether drafting technical briefs, preparing compliance opinions, communicating with public officials, or advising legal teams on code-related matters, Marty brings a practical, strategic approach that helps clients achieve successful outcomes.
A Lasting Impact on New York City
Throughout his 50-year career, Marty has played a role in shaping the regulatory landscape of New York City. He has participated in the development and revision of building codes and contributed to policy changes that support both the construction industry and the communities those regulations serve.
While he is quick to note that these efforts were collaborative endeavors involving many professionals, his contributions have helped keep codes focused on their ultimate purpose: protecting people and creating better, safer cities. Marty believes that effective regulations should balance technical requirements with the human needs they are designed to serve.
Why He Chose CodeGreen, A Pinchin Company
When Marty first set out to retire, he received calls from numerous organizations hoping to benefit from his decades of experience. Yet only one opportunity truly stood out.
Throughout his career, Marty had long respected Charlie Rizzo and the reputation of The Rizzo Group built within the industry. He admired the firm's commitment to quality, professionalism, and client service, even before becoming part of the team himself.
When Charlie personally reached out and invited him to join the organization, Marty saw an opportunity to work alongside people whose values aligned with his own. That same culture continued when The Rizzo Group became part of CodeGreen, reinforcing his confidence that he had made the right decision.
"The people here are special," Marty shared during his interview. "They're honest, hardworking, and genuinely committed to doing what's best for their clients." That culture of trust, collaboration, and excellence is what keeps Marty engaged and motivated, making CodeGreen the ideal place to continue sharing his expertise while working alongside professionals he deeply respects.
Looking Forward
Despite an accomplished career filled with notable achievements, Marty remains focused on what comes next. Rather than dwelling on past successes, he approaches every project with the same commitment to solving problems and supporting clients' goals.
His dedication extends beyond normal business hours as well. As a trusted advisor to both clients and colleagues, Marty remains available whenever challenges arise, offering the guidance and perspective needed to keep projects moving forward.
One Word? Three Words.
When asked to describe the Code Compliance team here at CodeGreen, Marty couldn't limit himself to just one word. Instead, he offered three:
Diligence. Honesty. Generosity.
Those qualities not only reflect the team he works alongside but also embody the values that have defined Marty's own remarkable career.
